The challenge
The embryology unit at the International Centre for Life is an NHS-funded service for the investigation and treatment of couples with infertility. They required the construction of 14 high-specification cleanrooms within purpose-built facilities for their dedicated team of medical, scientific, and nursing staff. But these cleanrooms needed building in a partially live environment. These include outpatient and inpatient facilities, as well as specialist laboratories.
The solution
Building Projects Group worked with the principal contractor on both the east and south wings to a very detailed and stringent quality standard. Some of the work had to be screened with temporary segregation using our own high-care environment charter to ensure safety and reduce the risk of contamination. All cleanrooms were fully vinyled with pass-through hatches and interlocking door sets and frames included within the build. Every cleanroom also had to meet the specific ISO standards, so there was no room for error.
The benefits
Building Projects Group finished the project on time and within budget. The facility now provides a comprehensive service for the investigation and treatment of infertility, changing the lives of many hopeful parents out there. Along with the outpatient and inpatient facilities - as well as specialist laboratories, sample rooms, and blood banks - the client was very impressed with the final project.
