The challenge

Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh NHS Foundation Trust wanted to transform an empty industrial unit into a sterilisation unit. It was in the perfect location to support all of their local hospitals and, in the longer term, would reduce costs, meet their future requirements, and reduce lead times for sterilising surgical equipment. But such a project would require a great level of planning, especially since it was high-specification work.

The solution

Building Projects Group worked as part of the construction team for Boulting Environmental Services, who undertook the design and mechanical and electrical installation. It was on us to complete the fit out of the empty industrial unit, which was over 24,000 square feet in size. Our work covered everything this facility could possibly need: changing areas, cleanrooms, toilets, and all the associated walls, floors, and ceilings.

The benefits

Our work helped to create what is now the largest sterilisation unit in the UK. To make it even better, everything was completed ahead of schedule and the state-of-the-art facility now provides sterilisation services for all surgical equipment at Wrightington, Wigan & Leigh and Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trusts. The client was particularly impressed with the high standard of workmanship and attention to detail, which was down to our stringent health and safety measures, site cleanliness, and our highly trained and skilled operatives.
